The engine had no factory oil filter other than the Continental-supplied oil screen.  I installed an Aviation Development Corporation external spin-on oil filter adapter.  The quality of the adapter was excellent, however the installation instructions supplied by ADC called for the filter to be installed on a flat plate attached to the engine mount frame on the left side of the engine compartment.  This mounting location would have required rerouting of the carburetor heat air intake scat duct, and would have made access to the oil dipstick difficult.  It would also have made for very long hoses from the oil screen mounting pad, which is on the right rear side of the engine.

My mechanic and I decided to position the filter adapter on the right side of the engine mount, closer to the engine oil screen mounting pad and away from the dipstick area.  We also decided to mount the filter on a removable plate that screws into nutplates that are attached to permanently mounted brackets on the engine mount.  The brackets themselves are clamped to the engine mount with Adel clamps.  This installation was only marginally heavier than directly clamping the filter mounting plate, and it saves a lot of headache of unscrewing and reinstalling Adel clamps whenever it is necessary to access the rear of the engine.

To install the filter on the right hand side of the engine it was necessary to re-route the engine breather hose from the right hand side of the firewall to the left side.  Since there was already a vacuum pump outflow hose on the left side, routing the breather next to this hose was easy.  Besides clamping, the only changes that were necessary for the airframe was to enlarge the left-hand hose hole in the "chin" fairing that covers the lower edge of the firewall.

The hose bend radius is a little tight with the right-hand filter adapter location.  I routed the hoses using a combination of 45 degree AN fittings on the oil screen adapter block on the engine, hoses with straight fittings on the engine side and 90 degree hose ends on the filter end, and 90 degree AN fittings screwed into the spin-on filter adapter block.  One hose is routed to come into the filter adapter from above, the other comes in from below.  Teflon hoses could possibly be used in this application to lessen strain on the hose.
